Transportation of a pet (dogs or cats) in public transport


A citizen may take his/her pet in public transportation, given that the animal holds:

  • A microchip (see below the “Animal Electronic Identification”);
  • All vaccines legally required up to date; and
  • A record at the Parish Council of its area of residence.


This service is provided at the Municipal Kennel, located at Rua de S. Dinis, no. 249, Monday to Friday, from 09h30 to 16h30.

Animal electronic identification


Placing a microchip in the animal (containing a unique and unalterable code), which enables to save information regarding both the pet and the owner.

This service is provided at the Municipal Kennel, located at Rua de S. Dinis, no. 249, Monday to Friday, from 09h30 to 16h30.

Animal adoption


The citizen who is interested in doing so, can request the adoption of animals who were collected from the street (and were not claimed within the deadline established by the law) or delivered to the Municipal Kennel by their owners.


The animals which may be adopted may be seen at the City Council’s website, more precisely at http://www.cm-porto.pt/saude-publica-veterinaria/pretende-adotar-um-animal.


This service is provided at the Municipal Kennel, located at Rua de S. Dinis, no. 249, Monday to Friday, from 09h30 to 16h30; Saturdays, from 10h00 to 12h00 and from 13h00 to 16h30.

Rabies vaccination


The citizen who owns a dog has the legal obligation to proceed to the rabies vaccination of his/her pets when they are over three months old.

The rabies vaccination in cats and other animal species is voluntary.


In order to proceed to that vaccination, the owner must have the health bulletin of the pet and the proof of the previous electronic identification of the animal (see above the “Animal Electronic Identification”).

Reception of animal in the kennel


A citizen may leave an animal collected from the street in the Municipal Kennel, or his/her own. In this case, the owner must have the identity card/citizen card and render proof of his/her residence in the City Council. He/She is then asked to sign a statement to confirm he/she handed in the animal at the Kennel and transferred the property on to the City Council.


After that, the Municipal Kennel determines the destination the animal will be given, which may be adoption or euthanasia.
