In Portugal, access to legal assistance in terms of consumer law is free. Serviço Municipal de Apoio ao Consumidor (SMAC) is one of the services which ensures support to the citizens should there be conflict. It promotes mediation, clarifies doubts on rights and duties resulting from a commercial transaction or the rendering of a service and informs, guides and advises consumers according to the law in force.

Citizens may search SMAC for information and legal protection in actions resulting from the acquisition of goods and services, as well as the celebration of contracts.
