The waste management system for households in Porto is based on the separation of 4 main waste fractions: paper and cardboard, plastic and metal, glass and mixed waste. The disposal of these 4 waste fractions should be made in the street bins available throughout the entire city.
The yellow bin is meant for plastic and metal packaging. In this bin you should deposit waste like plastic bottles, plastic bags, cans and beverage packages. The blue bin is destined to receive paper and cardboard and is where you should place cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines and writing paper. The green bin is for glass bottles, including coloured and non-coloured glass. Finally, in the grey one you should deposit all the remaining daily waste that doesn’t fit in the previous three bins, for example, food leftovers, dippers and used napkins.
The mixed waste collection is made daily from Monday to Saturday, at night. Therefore, the waste disposal in the street bins should be made at the end of the day, closer to 8h30 p.m. The remaining waste fractions are collected during the day or night depending the area.
For other selective waste fractions, like batteries, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), oil and construction and demolition waste (CDW), you can use one of our two civic amenity sites that are open between 8h 30 a.m. and 8 p.m. You can also request a collection service at your house for WEEE, CDW, garden waste and bulky waste (for example furniture). This service can be requested by calling our free line - 800 205 744 – between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or sending email for ecolinha@portoambiente.pt. You may also use these contacts to clarify any doubts or get more information about the waste management system.
Note: Fees may be applied to this service.
