Multilingual, European-oriented schooling facilities able to accommodate the needs of international children, from nursery to university, can be found in the Porto area.

Porto has much to offer when an English, French, German, or Spanish education background is required.

Pre-school, Primary, and Secondary Education

Preschool, Primary school (nine years) and Secondary school (three years) are universal, mandatory and free in the Portuguese public school network. English is taught from the beginning of the primary level at public schools, or from the pre-school level in private schools. Portuguese secondary students were ranked above OECD average in the last Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2018) that compares 15-year-old students’ educational achievements from 65 countries in mathematics, science and reading. There are 775 public schools and 414 private schools in the Porto Metropolitan Area (2018/2019). The number of students enrolled in the academic year 2018/19 per level of education is presented in the table below.

Porto is home to four prestigious international schools: - Lycée Francais Internacional do Porto: Established in 1963, it offers from pre-school to secondary school education. As part of the global network of Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE), the school provides intensive French language teaching in line with the programmes of the French government. Its diploma is recognised around the world. - Deutsche Schule zu Porto: Established in 1901, it is part of a network of 130 foreign German schools. The school provides a complete range of education to students, from kindergarten to secondary school, allowing them to continue their studies in Germany, Portugal or in any other country. - Oporto British School: Established in 1894, it is one of the oldest international schools in the world and the oldest British school in Continental Europe. The school provides an international education for students from ages 3 to 18. - CLIP - Colégio Luso-Internacional do Porto: Established in 1990, CLIP has students, aged 3 to 18. CLIP follows English national curriculum with local adjustments. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools. In addition to international schools, there are also several private schools in Porto with high reputation for academic excellence and a strong focus on foreign language teaching, some with subjects taught in English.
