All resident citizens have access to healthcare provided by the public National Health Service across the country, including the full range of services across the continuum of care, from prevention and primary care, to acute and emergency services and rehabilitation. National hospitals and local health centres cover the whole country as well as private institutions, with modern and well-equipped health units.

The Portuguese National Vaccination Programme is universal, free and prevents all pandemic threats - including tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Polio, Tetanus, Cervical Cancer and major diseases. Alongside with the health system’s improvement within the last 40 years, this Vaccination Programme contributed to Portugal having one of the lowest infant mortality rates in Europe, positioning Portugal as one of the safest countries for a child to be born in.
